About the Wire
Independent Calgary hockey media: an insider wire for the Flames and their pipeline.
Flames Scout Wire is a fast, credible "insider wire" for Calgary hockey, with real YYC / Red Mile flavour. Short takes and breaking hits go out on the socials; the deeper reads live here.
What we cover
We stay in our lane, the Flames ecosystem, top to bottom:
- Calgary Flames: trades, signings, rumours, cap moves, deadline intel.
- Calgary Wranglers: the AHL affiliate and who's knocking on the door.
- Flames prospects: draft picks, development, and pool rankings.
- Junior and college hockey: the WHL and NCAA rinks where Calgary's picks are actually playing right now.
That's the focus. We don't cover Calgary's other pro teams. This is a hockey wire, built for people who want Flames-and-pipeline intel faster than the official accounts.
The series
Everything on the wire runs under one of six standing formats. The kicker at the top of an article tells you which one you're reading, and you can read any series start to finish.
- Scout's Notebook: Prospects and draft picks, broken down fast. Who is this guy, and why should you care?
- Roster Report: The players you already watch every night. Contract reads, season reviews, and what a move actually means.
- Rinkside Dispatch: The news lane. Trades, signings, cap moves, and quick-turn reaction, filed the day it happens.
- Tales from the Sin Bin: Penalty-box lore. One great scrap story at a time, honest about which parts are legend.
- The Scrapbook: Franchise memory. Hall of Fame nights, anniversaries, and the quiet legends who never needed a fight card to matter.
- View from the Nosebleeds: The fan voice. Paid, bylined pieces by supporters who were actually in the building, not by us.
How we check things
Every subject we write about gets a research file, and every claim in it gets a verdict before a word of the article is drafted. That means a few specific promises:
- Sources get opened, not just cited. A claim isn't confirmed because somebody else printed it, or because a research tool said so. Someone here reads the source.
- Legend gets labelled as legend. A lot of the best old Flames stories can't be nailed down. We tell them anyway, and we say out loud which part the record supports and which part is barroom.
- Corrections run in the article. If we get something wrong, the fix appears on the piece itself, dated. We don't quietly edit and move on.
- Photos are cleared before they run. Every image is licensed or our own, credited in the caption, and never altered beyond a resize or crop.
Contribute to the wire
Flames Scout Wire is expanding. We're looking for writers and photographers close to the game: rinkside in Calgary, at the WHL rinks, or on the campuses where Flames prospects play. Competitive pay plus revenue share on high-performing content, results-based, and everything we run gets fact-checked before it publishes. If that's you, pitch us with your background and a writing sample at hello@flamesscoutwire.ca.
Not a writer, but you were there? That's what View from the Nosebleeds is for. It's a paid, bylined slot for fans with a first-hand story, and it's the one thing on this site we genuinely cannot write ourselves.
